An R&D Engineer has an optics, electronics, mechanics, or physics background and has demonstrated skill and initiative to solve technical problems and organize projects. The R&D Engineer is self-directed, inquisitive, and can work independently.

  • Work on a wide array of open-ended projects to further the company’s technological differentiation
  • Provide upfront technical risk assessment of new projects
  • Work onsite at factory locations to troubleshoot and/or develop manufacturing processes for novel programs
  • Evaluate and troubleshoot opto-mechanical assemblies, novel prototypes, or optical fabrication processes
  • Alignment and assembly of lab-grade optical and laser apparatus
  • Design and assembly of custom mechanical and electrical systems
  • Perform analytical and empirical studies in a lab environment of various optical components and systems
  • Clearly document and present work in written reports
  • May be required to use shop and power tools to modify parts or equipment


  • PhD in Optical Engineering, Electronics, mechanics, materials, or Physics or M.S. Degree and minimum 5 years applied experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficient in the use of various software tools such as Labview, Matlab or Mathematica. General programming knowledge in C++, Python or similar
  • Exposure to design software such as Zemax, and Solidworks (or other mechanical design software)
  • Experience performing system error analysis Gage-R&R and other studies, statistical process control environments such as JMP, Minitab or Design-Expert a plus
  • Familiar with real-time hardware control systems such as PLC or FPGA
  • Proficient in the use of lab equipment such as: AFM, Profilometers, interferometers and optical characterization tools. Electrical test equipment, signal generators and oscilloscopes
  • Intermediate/advanced mechanical skills, machine shop experience preferred
  • Approximately 20% travel required
