Edmund Optics® celebrates 75 years of successful impact to the world of optics
From surplus optics sales to innovative global optics leader
Edmund Optics (EO), the premier provider of optical components, is proud to celebrate their 75th Anniversary in 2017. The company was founded as Edmund Salvage in 1942, receiving surplus optical supplies from the US army in Philadelphia to repair and sell. At that time, founder Norman Edmund sold a pcx lens for ten cents and an achromat for twenty-five cents – making optics were very affordable and accessible to his fellow optics enthusiasts.
Dedicated to serving customers for 75 years
The company has focused on serving its customers from the first Edmund Scientific catalog in 1943 to providing supplies for the space race in the 1950s and 1960s to the ninety-five cent Barlow lens used in a color camera on the Apollo 11 lunar mission, to the 1980s when Edmund Scientific split into Edmund Scientific and Edmund Industrial Optics. Edmund Optics has been on the cutting edge with telecentric optics introduced in the late 90s, new manufacturing capabilities in 2000 with high precision spherical components, optical prisms and high quality optical coatings, as well as optical quality ensured by state-of-the-art optical testing. In the mid-2000s, magnetorheological finishing (MRF) and aspheric manufacturing was added to the optics toolbox. From design to prototype to volume production, today Edmund Optics can provide λ/20 accuracy optical flats, spherical optics and high precision, spherical aberration corrected aspheres. The innovative Cx Series Lenses with a user-adjustable mid-section has interchangeable accessories including filters, apertures and liquid lenses. These modular lenses have received awards and recognition from the magazines Vision System Design and Inspect.
