The wavelength spectrum of laser pulses increases when pulse duration decreases, so the short pulse durations of ultrafast lasers result in wide bandwidths. This wide bandwidth is then significantly affected by chromatic dispersion as ultrafast pulses travel through optical media, such as microscope objectives, acousto-optic modulators, windows, lenses, and filters.
